Cataract surgery Tanzania
Help people in Tanzania see again with cataract surgery. Your gift contributes to a cataract operation.
Cataract is one of the main causes of blindness, while a short operation can restore sight.
About this project
A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. Slowly everything becomes blurred, until a person can barely see, or not at all. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 94 million people worldwide are visually impaired or blind because of cataract. The treatment is simple: in a short operation the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial lens.
In Tanzania this operation is out of reach for many people. There is less than one ophthalmologist per million inhabitants, and the nearest eye clinic is often far away and too expensive. Research in the Kilimanjaro region showed that about half of the blindness there is caused by cataract that has not been operated on.
With your gift you contribute to a cataract operation in Tanzania. Someone who can see again can work again, go to school and take care of their family. According to the WHO, cataract surgery is one of the most cost-effective interventions in health care.
